It’s high time to indulge yourself in one of the most popular desserts consumed throughout the world: the ice cream. Although this product is becoming less seasonal, summertime is the favorite peak time for its consumption.

According to various researches, 86% of the population consumes ice cream in summer, while 41% only do so in winter. This product not only overcomes the limitations of traditional summer worries, but still makes many people consider it “fattening” and too caloric to include in the diet.

Nothing is further from reality: an ice-cream provides less than 300 calories per 100 grams, at that those dairy based (corns, chocolate ice cream) have more energy than the water based (stick ice-creams and sorbets). In fact, the latter barely exceeds 100 calories. Depending on the type of ice cream, this can represent between 5 and 10% of the energy your body needs daily, an amount acceptable and interchangeable perfectly for a snack, for example.

However, manufacturers of ice cream in recent years have opted for more healthy kinds, reducing calories and saturated fat, but mostly by reducing its size and selling it in smaller portions. The success of the mini-ice cream is already a fact.
By reducing the portion, you decrease your calories, so every time you buy more. In fact, in ten years the sales of ice cream in its reduced version have passed from no presence in the market to 71% of sales of all ice cream sales.

An ice cream is made mainly from milk and dairy products, representing 70% of its composition. Moreover, milk or vegetable fats are used which increase the palatability and energy intake, but in some cases it may provide essential fatty acids to your body. Thanks to milk, it becomes an excellent source of protein and calcium.

Consumption of 100 grams of this product provides between 5 and 10% of the amount of protein needed daily. For its part, between 10 and 20% of the recommended daily amount of calcium is consumed with 100 grams of ice cream or milk.

Another basic ingredient is sugar, which can be presented as sugar, glucose, honey… Some varieties also incorporate eggs, which facilitate and increase the creamy emulsion, or alternatively, fruit and juices, which may be the base of ice cream or added to milk or water. In this case, moreover, to incorporate fructose, some vitamins are added to the product. The ice cream frosting is usually made of cocoa or chocolate, and nuts. All these ingredients increase the calories and fat intake, but also provide very healthy fatty acids and minerals.

In fact, the nutritional and caloric composition varies widely depending on the ingredients used, so it is important to choose according to specific needs. Dairy ice cream is excellent for children, adolescents, elderly, pregnant women, athletes or low mood. The best option for overweight people or persons with high cholesterol would be diet and / or water-based kinds of ice-cream as sorbets and stick ice creams. Of course, their consumption should be moderate, since the latter tends to have moderate or high amounts of sugar.
