Homemade Pop-Tarts & Other At-Home Variants of Popular Sweets

Some of our favorite, most delicious food cravings are either processed grocery store foods or thousand-calorie restaurant desserts. Hey, I eat my fair share of sweets of all kinds, but making some of these classic desserts at home can save you a few guilt points and a few dollars.

Homemade Pop-Tarts


When you really think about the delicious nature of a Pop-Tart, you realize these are pretty simple breakfast treats — they’re made of pastry, filling, and topping. Instead of just popping in a few pre-made tarts (and shuddering to look at the box for the ingredient list), why not just make some yourself? You only have to bake them for about 15 minutes, and it’s so worth the wait.

The best part is that creating your own Pop-Tarts allows you to make whichever combination of flavors you want. If you’re craving strawberry filling with dark chocolate frosting on top, your wish is, well, your command. Make these treats with your family and friends for a fun, customizable, and recognizable snack!

Homemade Moon Pies

This is another grocery store snack that could probably use a homemade twist. Just looking at the picture of the homemade version puts me in the mood for a sugar overload. Every part of this recipe is homemade, including the marshmallow filling and chocolate coating, so you can totally make these pies on your own.

The best part about these is that they’re double-decker, meaning instead of just having two cookies with one layer of ice cream, there are three cookies and two layers of marshmallow filling. In this aspect of the dessert world, bigger is definitely better.

Homemade Hostess Cupcakes

Talk about taking something processed and packaged and making it positively scrumptious looking. Believe it or not, you can make everything from the creamy filling to the swirly icing top in your very own kitchen. If you have kids, introduce them to these babies and enjoy never having to buy them again.

Create cupcakes that immediately capture your friends’ and family’s attention. It’ll totally make their days when they try your homemade version and taste the perfectly complementary flavors of the marshmallow and semisweet chocolate. Better yet, get them all involved in the baking process itself!

Homemade Molten Chocolate Cake

Now you don’t have to hike over to Chili’s to indulge in this warm, gooey dessert. Making a molten chocolate lava cake is not only possible to do at home, it’s almost — easy. The trick is to eat them right after they’re finished so you can enjoy the heat of the molten center.

The recipe linked above explains how to make this delicious cake so that it’s sugar-free, low carb, gluten-free, and nut-free. It manages to accomplish all of these things without being taste-free, and that’s a pretty big accomplishment.

Homemade Twinkies

Twinkies are the ultimate guilt food. When you take a bite into this soft, tasty treat, you feel like you’re eating a stick of all that is bad for you in the food world. This doesn’t have to be the case! When you make your own Twinkies, you know exactly what’s going into them, and even if it’s not exactly low in calories, you know there aren’t any processed ingredients (which is a huge plus).

The part of this recipe that requires some extra thought is the molding. If you don’t happen to already have a snack pan with indentions shaped like Twinkies, the blogger suggests using a round spice bottle and aluminum foil. (See the recipe for an explanation.)

Homemade Peanut Butter Cups

Reese’s are my favorite candy, and I know I’m not the only one out there with a mild obsession with these little candy cups. To everyone who’s on my page, guess what? You don’t have to save this peanut butter and chocolate glory just for Halloween.

Creating these delicious candy treats is totally doable in your own kitchen. All you need is butter, shortening, milk chocolate chips, peanut butter, sugar, graham cracker crumbs (bet you didn’t see that one coming), and muffin cups, and you’re ready to go!
