Spice Up Your Meals with Some Rum

Rum is one of those alcoholic drinks that is very enjoyable to drink – you don’t get that bloated feeling after. And just like many other alcoholic drinks, rum is an excellent addition to the dishes that you regularly make at home. Even if you are a teetotaler, a dash (or two) of rum will be perfectly acceptable in your dishes!

Rum differs from other alcoholic drinks such as whisky and beer in that it comes from sugarcane by-products. Sugarcane juice and molasses are common raw materials for rum. These are fermented and distilled, with the resulting liquid aged in oak barrels.

Where did rum come from?

As you can see in the image above (Courtesy of Wikipedia), rum comes in all sorts of varieties. It is said, however, that the origins of rum can be traced to either ancient India or China. The ancestor of rum as we know it today is perhaps the drink that was distilled in sugarcane plantations in the Caribbean way back in the 17th century. According to historians, the first “true” rum was made in Barbados. From there, this drink has spread to the far corners of the Earth, with distilleries being established in many other countries.

Basic grades of rums

If you’re not all that familiar with the different kinds of rum,  knowing the basic grades of rum should suffice. These are the descriptors used to identify the varieties of the drink.

  1. Light rum.  This is the same as white or silver rum.  Since the flavor of this rum is not too strong and it has a clear color, it is used a lot for cocktails.
  2. Gold rum. Also known as amber rum.  This is usually aged and is darker than the previous kind.
  3. Spiced rum.  Gold rum is usually used as the base for spiced rum, which features more flavor which is achieved by the addition of at least one spice.  Commonly used spices are absinthe, cinnamon, rosemary, and pepper.
  4. Dark rum.  This kind of rum may be brown, black, or red and has a very strong flavor.  It is also aged longer than the previous kinds of rum.

I could be wrong, but  piña colada is perhaps the most popular rum-based cocktail. Personally, I like drinking piña coladas at the beach – it just seems to be the perfect match. And yes, I do hear Garth Brooks’ Two Piña Coladas in my head. Here’s a refreshing recipe for Frozen Piña Colada, which is going to be a hit for sure.

Another very popular rum-based drink is the mojito. Now this baby, I can drink every day during the summer. When made right, it can refresh you like no other! Here’s a recipe for mojito using golden rum.

Of course, when talking about rum-based drinks, we cannot forget the daiquiri.  This Strawberry-Coconut Daiquiri will tickle you pink. Trust me.

In case you find yourself shivering on a cold night, there is a perfect rum drink for you: Hot Buttered Rum. To be honest, I have never had this, but the recipe name alone is so enticing!

Truth be told, I have never tried using rum with fish. This recipe for Bahamian Mahi Mahi looks scrumptious, though. I think that it will also work with other white fish.

Don’t get me wrong – I don’t wish death on anyone, but this dessert is a classic and I’d gladly get at least two slices any day! Death by Chocolate packs tons of calories, but you ought to indulge every once in a while.

Another award-winning dessert is Tiramisu, which always gets people going for dessert even if their intentions were different at the beginning of the meal. I believe that every cook ought to know how to make this dessert.
