It’s National Chocolate Eclair Day!


There’s a certain air of sophistication whenever someone says “chocolate éclair.”  It could well be that it’s one of those French words that have invaded the English language. But even if it were not called an “éclair” the pastry itself is such a sinfully delicious pastry  — one that you’ll guiltily snatch from a table and return for one over and over again.

If you’re wondering what an éclair means, it’s French for “lightning.” No, it didn’t get the name from its traditional longitudinal shape. It got the name from the way it glistens when it is coated with a glaze. The origins of the éclair is not really known but the general belief is that it was first served in France around the beginning of the 1800s and it was famous French chef Marie Antoine Careme who was the inventor of this delicious pastry. By the late 1800s it was already being included in many cook books.

Now what is the difference between an éclair and a doughnut? The very DNA of these two treats are different. A doughnut is made with doughnut batter but an éclair is made with choux pastry, which is a light kind of pastry generally used to make a shell on which different creams or fillings are put in. A doughnut is also fried while an éclair is baked.

Since today is National Chocolate Éclair day, it’s the perfect time to bring out your baking equipment and make some yummy eclairs!
