Go Raw, Raw Food Diet – Rawism Explained

According to Wikipedia, “Raw foodism (or rawism) is a lifestyle promoting the consumption of uncooked, unprocessed, and often organic foods as a large percentage of the diet.” It is believed that once you heat food beyond 116 degrees Fahrenheit, it kills the enzymes that make it nutritious and easier to digest. Cooked or processed food lets you take in more acidic toxins and carcinogens that cause disease.

Our bodies become too acidic whenever we consume too much meat, dairy, junk food and the likes. Stress can also add to this. We have to counteract it by eating food high in alkaline like green leafy vegetables, fresh herbs and medicinal mushrooms. This raises the amount of oxygen in our blood and makes our bodies more balanced and healthier. This is one reason why wheatgrass drinks are famous these days.

A rawfoodist takes in 75-100% live, uncooked and unprocessed food. Examples of these are: fresh fruits and vegetables, freshly made fruit juices, dried or sun-dried fruits, beans, seeds, grains, nuts, legumes, seaweed, young coconut milk, purified water and organic unprocessed food. Some also eat non-pasteurized/non-homogenized milk and dairy products, fish (sushi, sashimi), eggs and meat.

There are different ways to prepare raw food. This includes sprouting (beans, seeds and grains), soaking (nuts and dried fruit), food dehydration and blending or juicing (fruits and vegetables). Use whichever way you wish, to create a variety of dishes that suits your taste and lifestyle.

There is a common myth that it is tedious to go on a raw food diet. This isn’t the case because preparing raw food is simpler than cooking.  All you have to do is prepare the ingredients and assemble them. An example would be the raw spaghetti, to prepare this dish just puree tomatoes, celery, basil and garlic in a blender or food processor and pour it over shredded zucchini. Easy isn’t it?

It is not just the convenience that attracts people to this diet. It is about being healthier in the long term. Many studies show that going on a raw food diet improves your complexion, boosts your energy, allows better digestion and it can result in weight loss; even weight stability. Demi Moore, Beyonce, Natalie Portman, Jason Mraz and even Steve Jobs are just a few of the long list of celebrities who attest to the success of this food program.
